President Donald Trump is facing fresh scrutiny after footage appeared to show him closing his eyes for an extended period during a Memorial Day ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery.
The 79-year-old president attended the annual wreath-laying ceremony on Monday with several members of his administration. The event included a wreath placement at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and remarks honoring families, veterans, and fallen service members.
But during part of the ceremony, while Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth was speaking, Trump appeared to sit motionless with his eyes shut.
The moment quickly spread online, especially because it came one day before Trump’s scheduled visit to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center.
Trump Appears Tired During Memorial Day Ceremony
Video from the event showed Trump seated during Hegseth’s speech, with his eyes closed for what critics said looked like a possible dozing-off moment.
The clip drew mixed reactions online.
Some defended the president, claiming he may have been praying or squinting because of the sunlight. “He’s praying,” one supporter wrote. Another said Trump was simply reacting to the bright weather, writing, “It’s sunny, so President Trump is squinting hard to take in the patriotic message.”
Others mocked the moment, joking that the president only appeared to drift off because the speech was not about him. “He was just blinking 1000 times consecutively,” one critic wrote. Another joked, “He is the best one in blinking, no one blinks like him.”
Walter Reed Visit Fuels Health Questions
The Arlington moment drew extra attention because Trump is scheduled to visit Walter Reed on Tuesday for medical and dental check-ups.
It marks his third scheduled visit to the military hospital in 13 months. Trump first visited Walter Reed in April 2025 for his annual physical. He returned in October for what officials described as a scheduled follow-up. Months later, the White House confirmed he had undergone a CT scan.
Dr. Sean Barbabella, the president’s physician, said the CT scan was done to “definitively rule out any cardiovascular issues” and showed no irregularities.
Bruising And Sleep Rumors Keep Drawing Attention
Trump’s upcoming check-up comes amid ongoing public interest in his health.
In recent months, observers have pointed to visible bruising on his right hand and repeated moments where he appeared tired during televised events. The White House previously dismissed concerns about the bruising, attributing it to tissue damage from frequent handshaking and aspirin use.
The Memorial Day clip added another round of speculation. Trump went on to deliver a 21-minute speech after the moment that sparked the online discussion. Still, critics used the footage to raise questions about his stamina, while supporters accused them of exaggerating a short clip from a formal ceremony.
For now, the timing is what keeps the story alive: a video of Trump appearing to doze off at a solemn public event, followed almost immediately by another scheduled hospital visit.
