David Harbour is finally responding to Lily Allen’s breakup album, and he is choosing his words carefully.

The ‘Stranger Things’ actor addressed Allen’s ‘West End Girl’ in a new Variety cover story published Wednesday, June 10. The album, released more than seven months ago, drew major attention because much of it appeared to track the collapse of their marriage.

Harbour, 51, called the experience “weird,” but said Allen had every right to turn her pain into music.

David Harbour Responds To Lily Allen’s Album

“I firmly believe that every artist has the prerogative to channel their experiences into their work, and I respect Lily for doing just that,” Harbour said.

Still, he made clear that he does not plan to unpack their marriage in public.

“I can’t elaborate much further because it involves my private life,” he said.

Harbour added that public curiosity does not change how he handles personal matters.

“I value my privacy and that of those close to me,” he said. “I prefer to keep those matters confidential.”

Harbour Says It Was Not His Experience

Later in the interview, Harbour said personal stories often depend on who is telling them.

“That’s precisely why I acknowledge her artistic expression of her experiences,” he said. “However, it wasn’t reflective of my perspective.”

He said his own experiences show up in his acting work, including the HBO limited series ‘DTF St. Louis.’

“My goal is to create content that provides comfort to viewers,” Harbour said. “I believe my strength lies in helping people feel less isolated.”

Lily Allen Said The Album Blends Truth And Fiction

Allen, 41, and Harbour ended their four-year marriage in February 2025. The couple married in 2020. Allen shares daughters Marnie and Ethel with ex-husband Sam Cooper.

Allen released ‘West End Girl’ on October 24. The album includes songs about marriage, heartbreak and alleged betrayal.

In later interviews, Allen said the record should not be read as a straight diary. She described it as a blend of personal truth and creative fiction.

“I composed this album in just ten days last December,” Allen said.

She also pushed back on the idea that it was a revenge album, saying her feelings had changed since writing it.

For now, Harbour seems to be drawing one clean line. Allen can tell her story. He just does not see it as the whole story.
