Elon Musk has made plenty of political statements over the years, but one short reply about his daughter Vivian Wilson is now getting heavy attention.

The X owner responded on Sunday, May 31, to a post that connected Wilson to Musk’s shift into right-wing politics. Wilson, 22, is Musk’s estranged daughter and a transgender woman. She is one of his 14 children, and Musk shares her with his ex-wife Justine Musk.

The post joked that without Vivian, Musk would never have entered politics, never would have bought Twitter, and Kamala Harris would now be president.

Musk replied with one word: “True.”

That was enough to set off a new round of debate.

Elon Musk’s Reply Put Vivian Back In The Political Conversation

Musk has become increasingly involved in conservative politics in recent years. He supported President Donald Trump’s 2024 re-election campaign and has repeatedly criticized transgender rights.

Trump later appointed Musk to oversee the Department of Government Efficiency, known as DOGE, at the beginning of his second term. Musk left the role after 130 days following disagreements with the White House over the budget.

His latest “True” reply drew attention because it appeared to accept the idea that Wilson played a major role in his political shift.

The post itself came in response to Wilson’s latest modeling campaign, which led users to revisit how much Musk’s family conflict has shaped his public views.

Vivian Wilson Has Spoken About Their Estrangement

Wilson has said she has been estranged from Musk since 2020. In April, she said she no longer wants her connection to him to define her life.

“There’s not much I can do about it, so who cares?” Wilson said. “It’s part of my story, but it’s not the future of my story.”

She also described her childhood as “very strange” and “very isolating.” “The upper class have their own private schools, social circles and whatever,” she said. “I have unlearned a huge amount, but even as a child, I was like, ‘This is a bit gauche.’”

Wilson said she remembered seeing homelessness as a child and feeling disturbed by it. She also said people dismissed her reaction at the time as dramatic, though she now believes her response was valid.

Wilson Says She Is Financially Independent

Wilson also spoke in September 2025 about building a career away from Musk’s money. She said she was financially independent after starting a modeling career. “People assume I have a lot of money. I don’t have hundreds of thousands of dollars at my disposal,” she said.

She added that while her mother is wealthy, Musk exists on another level of wealth entirely.

“I don’t have a desire to be super-rich,” Wilson said. “I can afford food. I have friends, a shelter and some expendable income, which is nice and much more fortunate than most people my age in Los Angeles.”

Wilson has also joked publicly about learning family news online. After reports in February 2025 said Musk had welcomed two sons with two different women within months, she said she found out through Reddit.

“Wow, if I had a nickel for every time I found out I had half-siblings through Reddit, I’d have two nickels,” she said in a TikTok. “Which isn’t a lot, but it’s weird that it’s happened twice, right?”

Musk’s one-word answer has now pulled their strained family history back into the center of his political story. And this time, he did not exactly dodge the connection.
