Donald Trump is turning a messy music festival rollout into a rally.

The president is now expected to headline the opening event for the Freedom 250 festival after more than half of the planned musical acts dropped out of the upcoming celebration tied to America’s 250th birthday.

The 16-day event, called the Great American State Fair, is set to take place on the National Mall from June 25 through July 10. Freedom 250, a group created by Trump through executive order to organize anniversary events, had originally announced nine performers for the festival. Then the lineup started falling apart.

Major Acts Drop Out Of Freedom 250

Several artists pulled out after Freedom 250 announced the performers.

Martina McBride, Young MC, C+C Music Factory, Bret Michaels, The Commodores, and Morris Day & The Time all reportedly dropped off the bill. Many of the acts said they did not realize the festival or organizing group had ties to Trump. As of Sunday, May 31, only three artists from the original lineup remained: Vanilla Ice, Milli Vanilli, and Flo Rida.

That left the festival facing an embarrassing optics problem. An event meant to celebrate the country’s 250th birthday suddenly became a story about artists rushing for the exit. One anonymous senior administration official reportedly described the rollout as “a mess.”

Trump Says He May Replace The Artists Himself

Trump responded by suggesting the music portion should be replaced with a rally.

“I understand Artists are getting ‘the yips’ having to do with their performance on Wednesday,” Trump wrote on Truth Social, before referring to himself as the “Number One Attraction anywhere in the World.” He said he was asking his representatives to study whether a rally could be held instead of live music.

Freedom 250 adviser Danielle Alvarez later confirmed that Trump will now kick off the opening event on June 24, one day before the first musical act had been scheduled to perform. Trump also described himself as “the man who gets much larger audiences than Elvis in his prime, and he does so without a guitar.”

Trump Slams Artists Who Dropped Out

Trump did not stop at replacing the performers. He also went after them.

“We should have a giant MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN RALLY, for 250, instead of having overpriced singers, who nobody wants to hear, whose music is boring, and yet who do nothing but complain,” he wrote. He also called for the musical performances to be canceled entirely. “Cancel it,” Trump wrote.

The president then compared the situation to his recent dispute involving the John F. Kennedy Memorial Center for the Performing Arts, claiming he had canceled his involvement after a judge ruled that his name had been improperly added to the cultural center.

For Freedom 250, the original idea was a patriotic music festival. Now it looks more like a political rally with a shrinking concert lineup attached. Trump may have lost several performers. He clearly thinks he is the bigger draw anyway.
