Anne Hathaway has revealed she secretly struggled with a rare eye condition that left her “legally blind” for years.
In a resurfaced interview from the New York Times ‘Popcast’, the 43-year-old actress opened up about developing early-onset cataracts and said the condition affected her vision for nearly a decade. Hathaway explained that she did not fully understand how severe the problem had become until she finally had surgery.

Hathaway said the condition affected her from around age 30 to 40.
“I didn’t realize how bad it had gotten until I could finally see the full spectrum,” she said.
The ‘Devil Wears Prada 2’ actress explained that the cataract became serious enough to affect one eye dramatically. “It impacted my vision so much that I was basically legally blind out of my left eye and I wound up getting surgery,” Hathaway said.
She also said the condition affected more than just her eyesight. “I’ve calmed down since then,” she added. “I didn’t realize it was actually taxing my nervous system.”
Hathaway Calls Her Vision A ‘Miracle’
According to the Mayo Clinic, cataracts can cause cloudy vision and make it harder to read, drive at night, or see someone’s facial expression clearly.
Hathaway said she now feels deeply grateful that surgery was available to her. “Two generations back,” she noted, the procedure “wouldn’t have been an option for someone like me.” The actress added that she no longer takes her eyesight for granted. “I appreciate vision because I literally feel like every day I wake up and I get to see the way that I do,” Hathaway said. “It’s a miracle.”
Hathaway Also Addressed Face-Lift Rumors
The resurfaced health comments come shortly after Hathaway addressed online speculation about her appearance.
In her May Elle feature, the actress spoke about rumors that she had undergone cosmetic surgery after her sculpted Oscars look sparked chatter online. Hathaway later shared a video showing that her hairstyle included two hidden braids, which she said helped create the lifted effect people were discussing.
She admitted she questioned whether responding to the rumors was the right move. “I’ll probably always wonder, ‘Should I have posted that or not?’” Hathaway said. Still, she explained that the speculation had become distracting. “The rumors had gotten so loud that you do feel the need to just get your truth out there,” she said.
Hathaway Pushes Back On Assumptions
Hathaway said the current online environment makes it easy for people to treat guesses as facts. “We’re at a time when people feel very confident in assuming what they think is fact,” she said. “Sometimes what they think is accurate and sometimes it’s not.” Between the vision revelation and the cosmetic surgery rumors, Hathaway appears to be drawing a clear line around public assumptions about her body and health.
For years, fans did not know she was privately dealing with serious vision problems. Now, she is making it clear that not every visible change has the story people think it does.
