Apple Martin is heading to the big screen, and the internet already has opinions.
The 22-year-old daughter of Gwyneth Paltrow and Coldplay frontman Chris Martin has been cast in Nancy Meyers’ upcoming comedy, marking her feature-film acting debut. The news comes shortly after Apple graduated from Vanderbilt University with a degree in law, history and society.
That would normally be a clean Hollywood debut story. For Apple, it immediately turned into a nepo baby debate.
Apple Martin Joins Nancy Meyers’ New Comedy
Apple was announced as part of the cast of Meyers’ new semi-autobiographical comedy, joining Tony Hale and Beverly D’Angelo. The project already has a stacked lineup that includes Penélope Cruz, Kieran Culkin, Erin Doherty, Jude Law and Owen Wilson.
The film will be Meyers’ first since ‘The Intern’ in 2015. She is writing and directing the project, which she previously described as a story “about a group of people making a film and the magic and mystery of what we do.”
Meyers teased production on Instagram two days before Apple’s casting news, sharing a photo of her director’s chair and writing, “So close to starting.”
The movie is currently set for release on Dec. 25, 2027.
Apple Says Acting Is Her Dream
This role marks Apple’s first major film part. She previously appeared in an episode of the HBO show ‘Rooster’ and has modeled for brands including Gap and Chloé.
In February, Apple told Vogue that she once planned to go to law school, but later realized she wanted to follow a more creative path.
She said she had moved out of her “rebellious ‘I don’t wanna be like my parents’ type of phase” and had started accepting what she actually wanted. “I don’t wanna be a singer,” Apple said, despite admitting she does like to sing. “I like musical theater, but getting onstage by yourself to sing is so terrifying.” Then she made the acting goal clear. “I love dancing and I love acting,” she said. “My dream is to act.”
Internet Calls Out Nepo Baby Advantage
Apple’s dream may be coming true, but some online critics are not clapping.
Her casting quickly sparked the usual nepo baby conversation, especially because her mother is an Oscar-winning actress and her father is one of the most famous musicians in the world.
“So many struggling actors/actresses out there, but nepo babies get to move to the front of the line,” one commenter wrote. Another added, “It’s just nepo babies all the way down. Paltrow’s a nepo herself.”
The criticism is not surprising. Hollywood has been deep in its nepo baby era for years, and every famous child who gets a major opportunity gets dragged into the same argument.
For Apple, the timing is brutal but predictable. Her first feature film is with Nancy Meyers, not some tiny student project. That makes the opportunity look huge, and critics are going to ask whether she earned the part or inherited the access. Either way, she is officially stepping into acting. Now she has to do the part every nepo baby eventually faces: prove she can survive past the last name.
