‘Euphoria’ is back in the center of online backlash after Sydney Sweeney’s character, Cassie Howard, made a controversial political remark during Sunday night’s episode, ‘This Little Piggy’.
The episode followed Cassie’s sudden rise from suburban housewife to viral fan platform star after Maddy Perez, played by Alexa Demie, helped turn her into an online celebrity. Once Cassie’s subscriber count exploded to 50,000 followers, she began a media tour that quickly moved into loaded cultural territory.
The problem came when Cassie leaned into tradwife-style talking points during interviews, making comments about men, gender roles, and modern politics that viewers immediately connected to real-world debates.
Cassie’s Political Comments Spark Backlash
In one interview, Cassie said she felt “like American men have been treated like second-class citizens.” She continued, “In the past, men used to be hunters and gatherers and protectors. Now, they’re being forced to walk around on their tippy toes. It’s not natural!”
In another appearance, Cassie argued that men should be able to “speak their mind” and “voice their desires.” Meanwhile, her husband, Nate Jacobs, played by Jacob Elordi, remained at home dealing with financial chaos after a violent wedding-night incident involving a dangerous lender.
The episode got even more uncomfortable during Cassie’s fictional appearance on Trisha Paytas’ digital show. Cassie made a shocking comparison about men being criticized for wanting a girlfriend who can cook or clean, leaving the hosts visibly stunned.
Then came the line that sent social media into full debate.
Fans Think ‘Euphoria’ Is Referencing Sweeney’s Real-Life Backlash
During the scene, an off-camera podcaster compares Cassie to a Democrat. Cassie laughs before responding with an ableist insult. The moment quickly sparked backlash, with viewers calling out both the language and the political framing.
Many fans also saw the scene as meta commentary on Sweeney’s own public image.
The actress faced criticism in 2025 over her American Eagle denim campaign, which used the slogan that she had “great jeans.” Some critics argued that the ad carried coded messaging tied to eugenics, a claim Sweeney later rejected. “I was honestly surprised by the reaction,” Sweeney previously said. “I did it because I love the jeans and love the brand. I don’t support the views some people chose to connect to the campaign.”
The episode seemed aware of that outrage cycle. At one point, Maddy tells Cassie, “The angrier these idiots get, the more money you make.”
Sweeney Says Politics Does Not Define Her
Sweeney has also pushed back against attempts to label her politically.
Asked about the viral “MAGA Barbie” nickname, the actress said, “I prefer not to comment on my personal political views.”
She later explained that she came to Hollywood for acting, not political debate. Sweeney said, “People seem to want to use me for their own purposes.” She added, “I’m not a political person. I work in the arts and didn’t come here to discuss politics.”
For viewers, though, Cassie’s latest episode blurred that line again. Whether the scene was satire, meta commentary, or another provocation from ‘Euphoria’, it gave the internet exactly what the show often does: a messy debate that refused to stay on-screen.
