Amber Rose is revisiting one of the most unforgettable award show moments of the 2000s, and she thinks she may have played a part in how it all started.
Rose, who dated Kanye West from 2008 to 2010, opened up about the infamous 2009 MTV Video Music Awards moment when West interrupted Taylor Swift’s acceptance speech. Swift, then 19, had just won Best Female Video for ‘You Belong With Me’ when West walked onstage, took the microphone, and declared that Beyoncé had “one of the best videos of all time” for ‘Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It)’.
The moment instantly became VMA history. It also kicked off years of tension between Swift and West. Now, Rose says the night may have started with her hyping him up a little too hard.

Amber Rose Says She Hyped Up Kanye Before The Show
On a recent episode of the ‘Ball In The Family’ podcast, Rose recalled encouraging West before the awards ceremony.
“I’m like, ‘Babe, you got that bottle of Hennessy upstairs,’” Rose said. “‘You a superstar. You need to get the Henny. We need to be taking shots of Henny on the carpet.’”
She said she kept boosting his confidence before they arrived. “‘You the biggest thing in the whole world,’” she continued. “I’m hyping him up. He’s like, ‘Yeah, yeah, let me go get the Henny.’”
Then the night took a turn she did not expect. “But that’s how I am as a girlfriend,” Rose said. “And it kind of backfired because all of a sudden, I’m just sitting there and then he’s on stage and I’m like, ‘Oh,’ I was not expecting that.”
Rose Says She Did Not Agree With How He Did It
Rose said the interruption matched West’s personality, though she made clear she did not support the way he handled it.
“That’s naturally Kanye’s personality,” she said. “Do I agree with how he did it? No. But was he right? Yes. That’s how I feel.”
That comment is likely to get people talking again. The VMAs moment has never really faded, especially because Swift and West’s public feud continued for years after it. Still, Rose said Swift did not blame her for what happened.
Taylor Swift Later Showed Kindness To Rose’s Son
Rose said she later spoke with Swift after the VMAs and described the singer as kind to her oldest son, Sebastian, whom she shares with ex-husband Wiz Khalifa. “She sent us a big box of all her merch and sent us tickets to a concert,” Rose said. “She understood that it wasn’t me that did it.”
Rose also framed the whole situation as something that happened when everyone involved was younger and still figuring things out. “I think we all got older and we learned from our mistakes,” she said. “She’s engaged now. We have kids. Kanye has kids. I have children now. At that time, we all didn’t have kids or anything. We were just young and just winging it.”
The 2009 VMAs interruption remains one of pop culture’s most replayed moments. Rose’s version does not erase what happened, but it adds a new detail from someone who was sitting right there when the night went sideways.
