Blake Lively’s Met Gala return was always going to draw attention. Then one red carpet clip gave the internet something else to argue about.

The actress made a surprise appearance at the 2026 Met Gala on Monday night, marking her first time at the event since 2022. Her return came just hours after she reached a settlement with her ‘It Ends With Us’ costar and director Justin Baldoni, following more than a year of legal disputes.

A joint statement from lawyers for both sides said, “We acknowledge the process presented challenges and recognize concerns raised by Ms. Lively deserved to be heard. We remain firmly committed to workplaces free of improprieties and unproductive environments.” It continued, “It is our sincere hope that this brings closure and allows all involved to move forward constructively and in peace, including a respectful environment online.”

Then came the dress moment.

Blake Lively’s Met Gala Clip Goes Viral

In keeping with this year’s Met Gala theme, ‘Costume Art’, Lively wore a Versace gown with a massive train reportedly inspired by 18th-century Venetian Rococo paintings.

That train needed help. A lot of it.

In a video that has now been viewed more than 13 million times on Instagram, Lively appeared to pause on the Met steps while several men helped carry the back of her gown. She held up her hand and seemed to direct them to let the fabric trail behind her instead of keeping it lifted.

Then she turned back around and continued walking.

The clip was posted with captions joking that “the dress said couture” while “the energy” felt like a workplace email. Another caption joked that no one had ever looked more likely to “CC HR” on the red carpet.

Critics Accuse Lively Of Being Bossy

The reaction came fast.

Some viewers accused Lively of “bossing everyone around” and acting cold toward the people helping with her gown. “It looks like she’s bossing everyone around. Mean girl energy,” one popular comment read. Another user wrote, “Yeah, that’s about right. Blake Lively bossing people around. Why is she even at that event? Isn’t she hated by now?” Someone else added, “The mask slipped and then she was nice.”

The criticism fed into a wider conversation around Lively’s public image, especially after months of legal drama tied to ‘It Ends With Us’. For some viewers, the short clip became proof of a larger attitude problem. For others, that was a major reach.

Fans Say The Backlash Is Unfair

Plenty of people quickly defended Lively, arguing that she was simply explaining how the gown should be handled for photos. “It looks to me like she’s instructing the people who are hired to assist celebrities on the carpet how to help or not help with her dress,” one user wrote. “Not mean or bossy just delegating like a boss.”

Another commenter said the backlash looked different because Lively is a woman. “This isn’t mean girl energy,” the user wrote. “This is telling the people who are supposed to help you how to help. if this were a man, nobody would have an issue with it.” A third person agreed, writing, “pov: a woman still acting twice as nice as any average man in her position would and then being hated for it.” Another added, “now if this were a man none of you would be saying a thing!! she’s literally telling them to let it trail behind her lol.”

Lively’s Met Gala appearance was supposed to be a fashion comeback moment. Instead, one train adjustment turned into a full debate about fame, gender, and whether the internet is now watching her every move a little too closely.
