Nicole Kidman walked into the 2026 Met Gala as one of the night’s co-chairs, but it was not only her red Chanel gown that got attention.

The Oscar winner, 58, went viral after explaining the inspiration behind her look, and the internet quickly decided the answer was much funnier than intended.

Kidman wore a floor-length red sequined Chanel gown with dramatic feathered detailing for Monday night’s event in New York City. The theme was ‘Costume Art,’ with the dress code ‘Fashion Is Art.’ Many stars leaned into famous paintings, sculpture references, and body-focused fashion concepts. Kidman’s explanation was simpler. She chose red.

Nicole Kidman’s Met Gala Explanation Goes Viral

When asked about the inspiration behind her gown, Kidman told Vogue, “Fashion is art, and I wanted red, because I wanted to embrace the way in which red has been used in art through the years. Vitality. Red is vitality. It’s love. It’s romance. So that’s what we want, right?”

That answer sent social media into full reaction mode.

One fan wrote, “I love how, besides being a chameleonic actress and classy movie star, Kidman is also one of the most unintentionally funny celebrities out there.”

Others were less gentle. Some viewers joked that her explanation sounded like someone trying to survive an art school presentation with no preparation.

One person wrote, “Watching nicole kidman stumble through the reason she chose a plain red dress is killing me.” Another added, “me when i didn’t research my paper due tomorrow.”

Fans Compare Her Look To A Cartoon Bird

The dress itself was not exactly ignored.

Kidman’s Chanel look featured red sequins and large feathered sleeves, which made some viewers compare her to a “red Tweety bird.” The comment spread because the outfit already had a theatrical shape, and her explanation gave people even more to joke about.

Another viewer posted, “Nicole Kidman invented the color red, how are people not connecting the dots.” Someone else mocked the phrasing, writing, “the way red has been used in art through the years, oh Nicole the woman you are.”

To be fair, Kidman did hit the dress code in a very literal way. Red has been central to art, fashion, religion, romance, danger, and status for centuries. The problem was not the concept. It was the way she explained it on the carpet. It sounded grand. It also sounded like she was making it up in real time.

Nicole Kidman Still Had A Major Role That Night

Kidman attended the gala with her daughter Sunday Rose, 17, who made her own Met Gala debut.

The ‘Bewitched’ actress co-chaired the event alongside Beyoncé, Venus Williams, and Vogue’s global editorial director Anna Wintour. It marked another major Met Gala role for Kidman, who previously co-chaired the event in 2003 and 2005.

This year’s exhibition was backed by lead sponsors Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez and centered on fashion’s relationship to the body. Curator Andrew Bolton said the title ‘Costume Art’ refers to the history of the Costume Institute, adding that fashion has “the status of art because of, and not in spite of, its relation to the body.”

Kidman may have arrived with serious fashion credentials. Still, the internet walked away with one thing: red is vitality, apparently.
