Katy Perry is facing a fresh wave of scrutiny after old clips showing her crossing physical boundaries with Justin Bieber and a teenage fan resurfaced just as multiple women’s misconduct allegations against her are drawing new attention.

The timing is what made the footage hit harder. One clip shows Perry grabbing Bieber during a backstage moment at Capital FM’s Summertime Ball in London in June 2012. Another shows her kissing a 14-year-old boy named Robert on stage after asking if he had ever been kissed. Neither moment is new, but both are now being reexamined through a very different lens as online debate over consent, power, and celebrity double standards grows louder.

Resurfaced Clips Put Katy Perry Under a Harsher Spotlight

In the Bieber clip, Perry is seen greeting the singer backstage before briefly grabbing his backside and mouthing, “Sorry, Selena,” a reference to Selena Gomez, who was then linked to Bieber. Because Bieber was 18 at the time, much of the online reaction focused less on the contact itself and more on whether people would have reacted differently if the genders were reversed.

The second clip drew a much sharper response. During her set, Perry brought 14-year-old Robert on stage, asked if he had ever been kissed, then kissed him on the lips in front of the crowd. Afterward, she told him, “Honey, you might be too young to understand this, but when a woman kisses you, you gotta kiss her back.”

That line appears to be one reason the moment is getting hit so hard now. Online reaction to the teen fan clip has been far less forgiving, with many viewers calling it uncomfortable and inappropriate.

The Backlash Is Growing Because New Allegations Are Also in Play

The resurfaced footage is now being viewed alongside sexual misconduct allegations from actress Ruby Rose and two other women. Rose has accused Perry of assault, while the other women have described separate incidents of unwanted physical contact at industry events and parties.

One woman alleged Perry placed her hand on her pelvic area during a photo moment at a queer party. Another claimed Perry pulled at her pants while she was in costume at an event, and said the situation only stopped when Perry’s manager stepped in.

Perry has denied Rose’s allegation through a representative, who said Rose has a history of making serious public claims that have been denied by those accused. Perry’s team has not publicly responded to the two other women’s accounts. No criminal charges have been filed in connection with any of the allegations.

That has left the internet focused on a harder question. Are these old clips just awkward celebrity moments from another era, or do they now look like warning signs people brushed off because of who Perry was and who the targets were?
