Patrick Schwarzenegger just picked up another buzzy role, and this one could put him in front of a whole new audience. The rising actor has been cast opposite Phoebe Dynevor in ‘Beach Read’, 20th Century Studios’ adaptation of Emily Henry’s bestselling 2020 novel. For fans of the book, the biggest question was always the same: who would play Gus? Now they have their answer, and it is one that may catch some people off guard.

Patrick Schwarzenegger Lands One of Romance Fans’ Most-Watched Roles

‘Beach Read’ follows January Andrews, a successful romance writer whose life is knocked off course by grief, writer’s block, and family secrets after her father’s death. She heads to his Michigan beach house for the summer, where she reconnects with Gus Everett, a former college rival and literary fiction author who is dealing with his own creative stall.

The setup is classic Emily Henry. Two writers. One summer. A genre-swapping challenge. And a promise that there will be absolutely no romance between them. That kind of deal tends to go exactly where readers think it will.

Phoebe Dynevor is set to play January, while Schwarzenegger has been tapped for Gus after what was reportedly a long search. According to the draft, he was not the obvious pick at first, but his audition tape and chemistry read with Dynevor changed minds fast.

That detail matters. Gus is a fan-favorite character, and casting him was never going to be a small decision. Schwarzenegger stepping into that role means the studio clearly sees him as more than a rising name. They are betting he can carry one of the most closely watched romance adaptations in the pipeline.

His Hot Streak Keeps Growing After ‘The White Lotus’

The film will be directed by Yulin Kuang, who co-wrote Netflix’s ‘People We Meet on Vacation’, another Emily Henry adaptation. Kuang also wrote the script for ‘Beach Read’, with Neal H. Moritz producing.

For Schwarzenegger, the casting keeps a very noticeable streak alive. He recently drew some of the strongest reviews of his career for playing Saxon Ratliff in season 3 of HBO’s ‘The White Lotus’, a role that pushed him into a much bigger conversation around what comes next.

He has also lined up another lead role opposite Margaret Qualley in Amazon MGM Studios’ romantic drama ‘Love Of Your Life’, which means this is now two major wins in a row for an actor who has clearly moved into a new phase of his career.

Before this run, Schwarzenegger had already built a steady résumé with roles in ‘American Sports Story: Aaron Hernandez’, ‘The Staircase’, ‘The Terminal List’, ‘Gen V’, and the Netflix film ‘Moxie’.

Now, with ‘Beach Read’, he is stepping into a project that already comes with a built-in fan base, high expectations, and a lot of curiosity around whether he can pull off one of modern romance fiction’s most talked-about male leads.
