King Charles and Prince Harry will both be in the United States this month, but do not expect a father-son reunion. Even with the Atlantic out of the way, the distance between them still looks very real. Charles is heading to Washington, DC, for a high-profile state visit hosted by President Trump, while Harry remains in California, and there is no sign the two plans will overlap.
The timing is hard to ignore. On the same day Harry delivered a keynote speech in Washington about privacy and the “personal and reputational cost for me, my wife and our children,” Buckingham Palace confirmed the King’s long-anticipated US trip. That alone was enough to get royal watchers asking the obvious question: if they are in the same country, why not meet?
Same Country, No Reunion
The King and Queen will travel to Washington at the end of the month for a formal state visit that includes a White House banquet and a joint meeting of Congress. That speech will mark the first time a British royal has addressed Congress since 1991, and it comes as part of events tied to the 250th anniversary of American independence.
Harry, meanwhile, has no reported plans to return to Washington during his father’s visit. His home in Montecito is still a five-hour flight from the US capital, and insiders say there is simply no meeting in the works.
“The Duke loves his father, and of course, he would love to see his father as much as possible,” a source said. “But we are living in the real world. They both have very busy lives and things aren’t always logistically or practically possible.”
That may be the official mood, but the history here is doing a lot of the talking. Harry and Charles have met in person only twice since the King’s 2023 coronation. Friends of the Duke insist the pair do still speak and “have a pretty good relationship,” though Charles has reportedly kept his distance during Harry’s continuing legal fights with the media and the Home Office.
Harry Still Hopes For A Bigger Family Return
That distance could shift if one major issue breaks Harry’s way. A decision is expected soon on his taxpayer-funded security arrangements in the UK, and if the review goes in his favor, sources say it could change everything about his future visits.
“If that were to happen, absolutely he would bring his family over to the UK more, both his wife and his kids,” the source added.
Harry is also expected in Britain as soon as July to begin the one-year countdown to the 2027 Invictus Games in Birmingham. That trip could open the door to another meeting with the King, though it is not clear whether Meghan, Prince Archie, 6, and Princess Lilibet, 4, would join him.
The family stakes are hard to miss. Charles, who is still receiving cancer treatment, has not seen Archie and Lilibet in person for nearly four years. And while Harry appears to have made some progress with certain members of the family, his relationship with Prince William remains deeply broken.
“He obviously has had more reconciliation with some members of the family than others,” the source said.
So yes, Charles and Harry may both be in America this month. That still does not mean they are anywhere close.
