Disney is shaking up its live-action Tangled remake, and one casting rumor is already sending fans into a frenzy. Kathryn Hahn is reportedly in talks to play Mother Gothel, the manipulative and unforgettable villain who raised Rapunzel while secretly exploiting her magical hair. The potential move comes after Scarlett Johansson quietly exited the project, opening the door for a new take on one of Disney’s most iconic antagonists.
According to industry buzz, Hahn is being eyed to step into the role following her widely praised performance in Agatha All Along, where she once again proved she can balance charm, menace, and dark humor with ease. If the deal moves forward, Hahn would inherit a character famous for her emotional manipulation and chilling control, making Mother Gothel one of Disney’s most layered villains.
The live-action Tangled is already shaping up to be a major event for the studio. Teagan Croft has been cast as Rapunzel, bringing fresh energy to the princess with the famously magical hair, while Milo Manheim will play the lovable rogue Flynn Rider. The film will be directed by Michael Gracey, with a script by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, as Disney looks to recapture the magic of the 2010 animated hit that earned nearly $600 million worldwide.

Casting decisions reportedly followed screen tests and chemistry reads held in London late last year, signaling that Disney is moving steadily toward production. Fans were especially surprised by Johansson’s departure from the film, but reports indicate the actress stepped away to focus on other major projects, including The Batman Part II and a new reboot of The Exorcist.
Hahn’s possible casting has only fueled excitement, especially given her proven musical abilities. Mother Gothel’s signature song, Mother Knows Best, is one of the most memorable villain numbers in modern Disney history, and Hahn has already demonstrated her vocal range through her recent musical performances on screen.
If confirmed, the role would further cement Hahn’s long-running relationship with Disney, following her standout work in WandaVision and its spinoff. With production expected to begin in the UK in 2026 and a planned release in 2027, the Tangled remake is quickly becoming one of Disney’s most closely watched upcoming projects.
