Prince Harry is facing another legal mess, and this one cuts especially deep. The Duke of Sussex has now been named in a defamation lawsuit in the UK by Sentebale, the charity he co-founded nearly 20 years ago in honor of his late mother’s legacy in Africa. For a royal already tied to years of public family fallout, this latest clash hits a very different nerve.

What makes it worse is the source. This is not another tabloid war or palace dispute. It is a legal fight involving a charity Harry helped build from the ground up, one aimed at helping young people affected by HIV/AIDS in Lesotho and Botswana. Now, that same organization is accusing him of helping drive a damaging media campaign against it.

How The Sentebale Fight Got So Messy

Harry exited Sentebale in March 2025 after disputes with the charity’s board chair, Dr Sophie Chandauka. The charity, founded in 2006, was created to address the spread of HIV/AIDS in Lesotho and Botswana. What started as an internal fallout then became far more chaotic.

As Chandauka sued Sentebale trustees to prevent her own firing, a series of explosive allegations spilled into public view, including claims of poor governance, weak executive management, abuse of power, bullying, harassment, misogyny, and misogynoir. With Harry and co-founder Prince Seeiso of Lesotho both out, further accusations of a cover-up followed, pushing the rift into an even uglier phase.

That background matters because it helps explain why this latest court fight has become so loaded, and why the charity’s public break with Harry now looks far more serious than a routine boardroom dispute.

Sentebale Says Harry Helped Drive Harmful Media Storm

Sentebale made public on Friday that it had filed proceedings in the High Court of England and Wales on March 23 against Prince Harry and former trustee Mark Dyer. In a sharply worded statement, the charity said it was seeking “intervention, protection, and restitution” after what it described as a “coordinated adverse media campaign” that had disrupted operations and damaged its reputation.

The trustees and executive director went further, saying Harry and Dyer had been identified “through evidence as the architects of that adverse media campaign,” which they claimed had a major viral impact and led to cyber-bullying aimed at the charity and its leadership.

That is a serious accusation, especially given Harry’s long connection to the organization. What began as a dispute over leadership and governance has now turned into a direct legal attack involving one of Sentebale’s best-known founders.

Harry Fires Back As Charity Rift Turns Fully Public

Harry’s side wasted no time responding. A spokesperson for Harry and Dyer said they “categorically reject these offensive and damaging claims,” and called it “extraordinary” that legal action was being pursued against people who had supported the charity for nearly two decades.

The spokesperson also questioned the optics of the lawsuit, saying it was troubling that money was being used to go after the people who helped create the organization rather than the communities it was meant to serve. Sentebale pushed back on that point in its own statement, saying the legal costs were being covered entirely by outside funding and that no charitable funds had been used.

The charity also stressed that its funders had kept their full financial commitment and that individual donors had continued to stand by its mission. Sentebale said its focus remains on the 78,000 young lives it supports across Southern Africa.

Still, the damage here is obvious. What began as an internal leadership dispute has now turned into a public legal war involving one of the charity’s most famous founders. And for Prince Harry, it adds yet another courtroom battle to a public life already crowded with them.
