Sabrina Carpenter’s first Coachella headlining set had the big-budget glow, the celebrity cameos, and the crowd energy. Then one unexpected exchange stole the spotlight. A now-viral moment from the show has people talking after Carpenter mistook a fan’s celebratory cultural cry for a yodel, then said onstage, “I don’t like it.”
The moment happened Friday, April 10, during the 2026 Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in Indio, California. Carpenter, 25, was seated at the piano and getting ready to introduce ‘We Almost Broke Up Again Last Night’ when she reacted to a loud sound from the crowd. What followed sparked confusion in the moment and a flood of reactions online after the clip took off.
Viral Coachella Exchange Puts Sabrina In The Spotlight
“I think I heard someone yodel. Is that what you’re doing?” Carpenter asked from the stage, before adding, “I don’t like it.”
When the fan answered, “It’s my culture,” Carpenter replied, “That’s your culture, is yodeling?” The crowd member then explained, “It’s a call! It’s a call of celebration!” Carpenter answered, “Is this Burning Man? What’s going on? This is weird.”
That short exchange quickly spread across X, where millions viewed the clip and many users identified the sound as zaghrouta, a traditional Arabic cry used to express joy and celebration. The vocal call is widely associated with weddings, parties, and other major gatherings, and some commenters said Carpenter’s description of it as “weird” came off badly.
Several X users took issue with Carpenter’s word choice and said that calling the cry “weird” was “disrespectful” on her side.

Sabrina Apologizes For Her Reaction
Not everyone thought the moment was malicious. Some people pointed out Carpenter may not have fully heard what the fan was saying from the stage. She later addressed the backlash herself and issued a public apology.
“My apologies,” Carpenter wrote. “I didn’t see this person with my eyes and couldn’t hear clearly. My reaction was pure confusion, sarcasm, and not ill-intended. Could have handled it better!”
She added, “Now I know what a zaghrouta is! I welcome all cheers and yodels from here on out.”
That response seemed to calm some of the criticism, though the clip is still making the rounds because it hit on a bigger issue about cultural awareness in live performance spaces.
Carpenter’s set itself was otherwise a major milestone. It marked her first Coachella headlining slot, two years after her festival debut in 2024. The show pulled heavily from her latest albums, ‘Man’s Best Friend’ and ‘Short ‘n Sweet,’ and came loaded with celebrity cameos. Sam Elliott appeared in the opening short film, Will Ferrell popped up as an electrician, Samuel L. Jackson voiced a spiritual guide, and Susan Sarandon appeared as an older version of the ‘Espresso’ singer.
So yes, the set had star power. But this was the moment that got people talking.
