Showrunner Francesca Gardiner and director Mark Mylod announced that John Lithgow, Janet McTeer, Paapa Essiedu, Nick Frost, Luke Thallon, and Paul Whitehouse will take on Dumbledore, McGonagall, Snape, Hagrid, Quirrell, and Filch. That lineup instantly gave the project more weight. It also made clear that HBO is aiming for a polished, high-end take on the franchise.
The network says the series will stay faithful to J.K. Rowling’s books, with each season digging deeper into the world than the films could. That promise matters because fans have spent years debating what the movies rushed, trimmed, or skipped. HBO is clearly leaning into that frustration.
Why the Harry Potter HBO cast is drawing so much heat
The young leads were also locked in during May 2025. Dominic McLaughlin will play Harry Potter, Alastair Stout will play Ron Weasley, and Arabella Stanton takes on Hermione Granger. Production began just two months later, which gave the reboot real momentum fast.
Stanton already has stage credibility after starring in Matilda: The Musical in London’s West End. McLaughlin is still new to many viewers, though he has already landed a role in the upcoming Sky comedy Grow. Stout is an even fresher face, making his screen debut after beating nearly 30,000 other hopefuls.
Big names bring fresh energy to Hogwarts
John Lithgow gives Dumbledore instant authority, while Janet McTeer feels like a natural fit for McGonagall. Paapa Essiedu steps into the pressure-packed role of Snape, which may become one of the most closely watched performances in the series. Nick Frost as Hagrid adds a warmer, more playful edge that could really work.
Luke Thallon joins as Quirrell after building much of his reputation onstage, and Paul Whitehouse brings long-running comic experience to Filch. HBO also tapped Katherine Parkinson as Molly Weasley, Lox Pratt as Draco Malfoy, and Johnny Flynn as Lucius Malfoy. Together, those additions deepen the bench quickly.
