Steven Spielberg has worked with plenty of stars, but even he seemed impressed by one Tom Cruise habit that kept showing up before the cameras rolled. The Oscar-winning director recently opened up about what it was really like making movies with Cruise, and his answer came with a detail that feels very on-brand for the actor.

Speaking at SXSW in Austin, Texas, Spielberg reflected on directing Cruise in ‘Minority Report’ in 2002 and ‘War of the Worlds’ in 2005. That is when he shared the unusual thing Cruise kept doing on set. He was already there, waiting.

What Spielberg Said About Cruise

“Tom Cruise was there every morning when I arrived,” Spielberg said. He explained that he is usually known for getting to set before the crew, sometimes as early as 6:30 a.m.

During both films, Cruise apparently made it a point to arrive at the same time so he and Spielberg could map out the day together before shooting began. Spielberg said that routine was incredibly helpful and showed just how collaborative Cruise was.

It is a small detail. But this lines up with the actor’s long-running reputation for being intensely prepared and fully locked into the work.

Why This Feels Very Tom Cruise

For anyone who follows Cruise, the story tracks. The ‘Mission: Impossible’ star has built a reputation around doing the extra thing, whether that means training for demanding stunts, learning new skills, or flying aircraft himself.

In a 2025 interview, Cruise said he is always working on something, whether it is piano, dance, skydiving, or flying planes and helicopters. He sees all of it as part of sharpening his craft.

That mindset has shown up in his films too. Christopher McQuarrie, who has directed several ‘Mission: Impossible’ movies, has said that whenever Cruise is seen flying an aircraft on screen, he is actually doing it himself. Cruise also designed a special training program for younger cast members on 2022’s ‘Top Gun: Maverick’.

So yes, showing up before dawn to plan the day with Spielberg sounds unusual. For Tom Cruise, it also sounds exactly right.
