Savannah Guthrie may soon be heading back to New York City after weeks away from her role on NBC’s Today show as she focuses on the heartbreaking disappearance of her mother.
The longtime morning show co-anchor rushed to Tucson, Arizona in early February after her 84-year-old mother, Nancy Guthrie, was reported missing. What initially began as a missing person case quickly escalated when investigators began treating the situation as a suspected abduction. Nancy was last seen on January 31 following a family dinner and was expected at her regular Sunday church service the next morning, but when she failed to appear, the family alerted authorities.
Nancy Guthrie officially vanished on February 1, and law enforcement has since launched an extensive investigation to uncover what happened. Authorities believe she may have been taken during the night, and the search effort has expanded with investigators continuing to pursue leads. The case has drawn national attention as friends, family, and volunteers work tirelessly to gather any information that could help locate her.
Now, nearly a month into the investigation, sources say Savannah may soon be returning to her professional duties. According to reports, the veteran journalist is expected to travel back to New York this weekend as she begins adjusting to the possibility that the search for her mother could take much longer than hoped.
In a deeply emotional Instagram video posted in late February, Guthrie urged anyone with knowledge about the case to come forward. She asked potential witnesses not to stay silent and pleaded for help bringing her mother home, saying the family hopes either for a miraculous reunion or the chance to properly honor Nancy’s life and legacy.
Insiders say NBC is preparing for Guthrie’s eventual return to Today, though a specific date has not yet been announced. Sources close to the family say Guthrie is trying to reestablish some sense of normal life for her children and husband, former political adviser Michael Feldman, who remain based in New York City. Even so, those close to her say she remains ready to return to Arizona immediately if there is any major breakthrough in the investigation.
Throughout the ordeal, Guthrie’s Today colleagues have rallied around her. Studio 1A has been decorated with yellow roses, and hosts have worn yellow ribbons to show solidarity. The show also confirmed that Hoda Kotb will continue filling in during Guthrie’s absence. Meanwhile, the family has offered a $1 million reward for information that could lead to Nancy’s safe return and pledged an additional $500,000 donation to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.
