Actor Paul Bettany has addressed speculation that he could portray Lord Voldemort in HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter television series, saying he has not been contacted about the role.

Bettany spoke about the rumors while attending the Saturn Awards, where he told ScreenRant that he had not heard anything from the production regarding the part.

“I haven’t heard a peep about that,” Bettany said, adding that while he is a fan of the Harry Potter universe and HBO’s work, no one associated with the series has approached him about playing the franchise’s main antagonist.

The speculation began circulating after actor Cillian Murphy publicly denied reports that he had been considered for the role. Following Murphy’s comments, some fans suggested Bettany could be a possible candidate to portray the character originally played by Ralph Fiennes in the film series.

Another actor rumored for the role, Tilda Swinton, has not publicly addressed the speculation.

HBO’s upcoming adaptation of J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter books is planned as a long-form television series spanning seven seasons. Each season is expected to cover one of the novels, with the first installment scheduled to debut in 2027.

Casting for the three central student roles has already been announced. Dominic McLaughlin will play Harry Potter, with Alastair Stout cast as Ron Weasley and Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger.

Several prominent actors have also been confirmed for major adult roles. John Lithgow will portray Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer has been cast as Minerva McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu will play Severus Snape, and Nick Frost is set to appear as Rubeus Hagrid.

Warwick Davis, who appeared in the original film series, is expected to return as Professor Filius Flitwick, making him the only confirmed cast member reprising a previous role.

The project has also drawn public discussion due to controversy surrounding Rowling’s views on transgender issues. The author has faced criticism in recent years over statements about gender identity and donations to organizations involved in related political debates.

Lithgow recently addressed those concerns in comments about his decision to join the production. He said Rowling is not directly involved in the day-to-day work of the series despite holding an executive producer credit.

The actor acknowledged the criticism surrounding the project but said he ultimately chose to remain involved, noting that the Harry Potter stories themselves emphasize themes of kindness and acceptance.
