Hero Fiennes Tiffin says Benedict Cumberbatch’s portrayal of Sherlock Holmes remains the version of the famous detective that stands out most to him.
Tiffin, who plays the lead role in the new series Young Sherlock, recently spoke about the many actors who have portrayed Arthur Conan Doyle’s legendary character. When asked about his favorite interpretation, he pointed to Cumberbatch’s performance in the BBC series Sherlock.
“When I picture Sherlock, it’s Cumberbatch who comes to mind,” Tiffin told People.
The BBC drama, which aired for four seasons, modernized Conan Doyle’s classic detective stories and earned critical acclaim for its writing and performances. Cumberbatch starred alongside Martin Freeman, who played Dr. John Watson.
Tiffin said he has watched the series multiple times and considers it one of the most memorable portrayals of the character.
“I’ve revisited it three times,” he said. “Cumberbatch’s performance was phenomenal. For me, it’s the definitive portrayal.”
Before discovering the BBC show, Tiffin said he and his brother were fans of the Sherlock Holmes films directed by Guy Ritchie and starring Robert Downey Jr.
“But when the BBC series came out, it was a game-changer,” he said.
Tiffin now steps into the role himself in Young Sherlock, a series that explores the early years of the famous detective. The show focuses on Sherlock’s youth and the events that shape his future career as a brilliant investigator.
According to Tiffin, the opportunity to portray the character is one he never expected.
“Sherlock is a character I’ve always admired,” he said. “To play him in a Guy Ritchie production is beyond my wildest dreams.”
The series also explores the early relationship between Sherlock Holmes and his future rival James Moriarty, examining how their connection evolves into the rivalry that defines their story.
Young Sherlock is currently available to stream on Prime Video.
