Kate Hudson grew up in one of Hollywood’s most famous families—but when it comes to acting, there’s one surprising rule in her household.

They don’t talk about it.

During a recent appearance on Deadline’s The Actor’s Side series, the 46-year-old actress revealed that acting is rarely a topic of conversation between her and her mother, screen legend Goldie Hawn.

“We never talk about acting,” Hudson said, explaining that while they may discuss movies or share experiences, they don’t sit around dissecting performances or giving each other industry advice.

For a family that includes Goldie Hawn, Kurt Russell, Oliver Hudson, and Wyatt Russell, that might come as a shock. But according to Hudson, her parents were never the type to micromanage her career or push her in a particular direction.

“They’re not stage parents,” she clarified, emphasizing that her upbringing was more about learning the craft than receiving constant notes from her famous mom.

That said, there are exceptions.

At a recent Los Angeles screening of Hudson’s new film Song Sung Blue, a Neil Diamond tribute band biopic, the pair briefly broke their unspoken rule. Hudson shared that Hawn loved the movie and asked thoughtful questions about her process—something she described as rare and meaningful.

Looking back, Hudson said her childhood was centered more on artistic growth than Hollywood strategy. The focus was on developing skills, not chasing status.

Hawn echoed that perspective earlier this year, noting that their conversations tend to revolve around family and life rather than box office numbers or industry gossip. For them, work is something they do—not something that defines who they are.

In a town where shop talk often dominates dinner tables, the Hudson-Hawn household has chosen a different script.
