Anthony Head, the British actor known for ‘Buffy The Vampire Slayer’ and ‘Ted Lasso,’ has died. He was 72.

Head’s daughters, actors Emily and Daisy Head, said he died from complications from pneumonia. They confirmed that he passed away peacefully while surrounded by family.

The actor’s death has hit ‘Buffy’ fans hard, especially after several former co-stars shared emotional tributes to the man who played Rupert Giles, Buffy Summers’ Watcher, mentor, and steady father figure throughout the cult series.

“Our grief is far greater than the hole he has left behind, but we know his legacy will live on, in the shows he was a part of, and in the audiences that love them,” his daughters said. “How lucky we are to know we are able to watch him doing what he loved, even when he is no longer with us.”

Sarah Michelle Gellar Shared A Painful Tribute

Sarah Michelle Gellar, who starred as Buffy Summers, shared several photos with Head on Instagram and quoted a line from the series.

“Tell Giles I figured it out and I’m ok,” she wrote.

Then she added the part that made the tribute especially painful.

“Well I don’t have it figured out and I’m not ok,” Gellar continued. “But I know I’m the lucky one because I knew you. Thank you to Daisy and Emily who not only shared their dad with me, but with the world.”

Head originated the role of Rupert Giles and appeared across all seven seasons of ‘Buffy The Vampire Slayer.’ He was a main cast member for the first five seasons and returned as a recurring presence in the final two.

For many viewers, Giles was more than a librarian. He was Buffy’s guide, protector, and the emotional anchor of the Scooby Gang.

That is why the tributes have felt so personal.

‘Buffy’ Co-Stars Remembered His Kindness

David Boreanaz, who played Angel, also honored Head on Instagram Stories.

“RIP. He was so kind and generous of a soul,” Boreanaz wrote.

James Marsters, who played Spike, posted a longer tribute, calling Head “an unflaggingly kind and steady presence” on the set of ‘Buffy.’

“He was the best of us,” Marsters wrote. “I was lucky to have known, and learned from him.”

Eliza Dushku, who played Faith, wrote, “Tony H, for every scene and time shared, give thanks. Rest in love and peace, kind sir. A dear one.”

Charisma Carpenter, who played Cordelia Chase, said Head gave life to a character who became deeply meaningful for fans.

“Tony brought life to a character who, for so many, was the father figure they needed but didn’t have at home,” Carpenter wrote.

Emma Caulfield, who played Anya, remembered Head as a friend of 27 years and shared a memory of visiting him in London in 2011.

She described him as “kind and wise and a guide in troubled times.”

Anthony Head Had A Career Beyond ‘Buffy’

Before ‘Buffy,’ Head was already familiar to British audiences.

In the 1980s, he became widely known through a series of Nescafe Gold Blend coffee ads, where he appeared as one half of a will-they, won’t-they romantic pairing. The campaign later reached American audiences after being re-shot for Taster’s Choice.

He later found a new generation of fans through ‘Ted Lasso,’ where he played Rupert Mannion, the villainous ex-husband of Hannah Waddingham’s Rebecca.

The role showed another side of Head’s screen presence. In ‘Buffy,’ he brought warmth, restraint, and quiet strength. In ‘Ted Lasso,’ he turned charm into something colder and more ruthless.

That range is part of why his death has drawn such a strong response from fans across several eras of television.

His Family Says His Legacy Will Live On

Head’s daughters said it had been “an honour and a privilege” to be his children and to see the effect his work had on audiences. That impact is now being reflected in the wave of tributes from fans and co-stars.

For ‘Buffy’ viewers, Head’s death also comes during an especially painful stretch for the show’s extended family. Nicholas Brendon, who played Xander Harris, died earlier this year at 54. Michelle Trachtenberg, who played Dawn Summers, died in 2025 at 39. Now, fans are mourning Giles too.

Anthony Head leaves behind a career that crossed British advertising, cult television, streaming comedy, stage work, and generations of viewers who still see him as the calm voice in the middle of chaos.
