Tyler Mane is opening up about a deeply personal health battle.
The actor, best known for playing Sabretooth in the ‘X-Men’ franchise, revealed this week that he has been diagnosed with breast cancer. He shared the news in a video posted to social media, where he also announced that he had begun chemotherapy treatment.
Mane said he hopes his experience will help raise awareness about a disease many people do not associate with men.
Tyler Mane Reveals Breast Cancer Diagnosis
“I have some difficult news to share,” Mane said in the video. “Today marks the start of my chemotherapy.”
In the accompanying caption, the actor described his diagnosis as “extremely rare.”
Mane did not disclose additional details about his condition or treatment plan. Representatives for the actor have not publicly provided further information.
The 6-foot-9 performer is known to comic book fans for portraying the villain Sabretooth in 2000’s ‘X-Men.’ He also recently appeared in ‘Deadpool & Wolverine.’
Male Breast Cancer Remains Rare
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, men account for about 1% of all breast cancer diagnoses in the United States.
Although uncommon, breast cancer can affect men as well as women.
The CDC notes that risk factors may include inherited BRCA1 or BRCA2 gene mutations, age over 50, family history of breast cancer, obesity, radiation exposure, liver disease and certain testicular conditions.
Unlike women, men currently do not have established routine screening recommendations for breast cancer.
Raising Awareness Through His Story
By sharing his diagnosis publicly, Mane said he hopes to draw attention to male breast cancer and encourage conversations about symptoms and early detection.
The CDC advises that warning signs can include lumps or swelling in the breast area, skin changes, nipple discharge and persistent pain.
While Mane’s announcement came as a surprise to many fans, his message focused on awareness and education.
For now, the actor is beginning treatment and using his platform to highlight a condition that often goes overlooked.
