James Gunn has finally answered one of the strangest Supergirl questions bouncing around the internet.

Fans recently noticed that Milly Alcock’s Kara Zor-El appears to have pierced ears in promotional material for the upcoming DCU film ‘Supergirl.’ That led to a very specific Kryptonian debate: how does someone with bulletproof skin get piercings?

Gunn, the co-head of DC Studios, stepped in on Threads with an explanation.

James Gunn Explains Supergirl’s Piercings

“As explained in ‘Superman,’ it’s the same principle that allows her to get drunk. She visits planets with red suns,” Gunn wrote.

That answer points directly to DC lore. Under a red sun, Kryptonians lose their powers and become vulnerable like humans. So, Kara could have had her ears pierced during one of those powerless trips.

Gunn also offered another possibility.

“Remember, Kara grew up on a fragment of Krypton, so she didn’t develop her superpowers until her teenage years,” he added.

That means she may have gotten the piercings before becoming nearly invulnerable.

Fans Had Turned One Detail Into A Debate

The question started gaining traction after fans studied Alcock’s first-look images. Some viewers treated the pierced ears as a minor costume detail. Others turned it into a full continuity argument.

That is how superhero fandom works now. A trailer drops, a poster appears, and suddenly one earring becomes a multiverse-level issue.

For now, Gunn’s answer gives fans enough logic without spoiling the movie’s plot.

‘Supergirl’ Arrives In 2026

‘Supergirl’ is directed by Craig Gillespie and written by Ana Nogueira. Alcock leads the film as Kara Zor-El, with Matthias Schoenaerts as Krem of the Yellow Hills and Eve Ridley as Ruthye Marye Knoll.

The cast also includes David Krumholtz as Zor-El, Emily Beecham as Alura In-Ze, David Corenswet as Superman and Jason Momoa as Lobo.

The film follows Kara as she teams with an unlikely partner on an interstellar mission for vengeance and justice after an enemy strikes close to home.

‘Supergirl’ is set to hit U.S. theaters on June 26, 2026.

So, mystery solved. Supergirl can wear earrings, and DC fans can move on to the next very serious question.
