Bella Hadid brought a major 1960s fashion reference to Cannes.

The model and actress attended the premiere of ‘De Gaulle: Tilting Iron’ on Wednesday at the Cannes Film Festival, stepping onto the red carpet in a custom white Schiaparelli gown inspired by one of Jane Birkin’s most famous looks. The result was bold, nostalgic, and exactly the kind of Cannes fashion moment Hadid is known for.

Bella Hadid Channels Jane Birkin At Cannes

Hadid’s custom Schiaparelli gown featured a deep neckline, a fitted bodice, and a lace-up back with a bow detail. The white design created a sharp, clean silhouette while still leaning into the relaxed sensuality associated with Birkin’s 1960s style.

Hadid was styled by Mimi Cuttrell and wore her hair in a tight bun, keeping the focus on the dress and its fashion history reference.

The look nodded to the Emilio Pucci dress Birkin wore to the 1969 Union of the Artists Gala in Paris. Birkin famously wore the dress backward after a last-minute wardrobe issue, creating an accidental plunging effect that became one of her most remembered style moments.

Hadid’s version gave that reference a more modern red carpet finish.

Jane Birkin’s Fashion Influence Lives On

Birkin, who died in 2023 at age 76, remains one of fashion’s most referenced figures.

Her influence stretches from effortless 1960s dressing to the Hermès Birkin bag, one of the most exclusive handbags in the world. Her style was never overly forced, which is part of why designers and celebrities still return to her looks decades later.

Hadid has often used Cannes as a place to make fashion statements that mix old Hollywood, French style, and modern runway drama. This Schiaparelli gown fit directly into that pattern.

Hadid Also Enjoys Yacht Break In Cannes

Earlier in the week, Hadid was photographed taking a break from the red carpet while spending time with friends on a yacht.

The model wore gold swimwear as she relaxed onboard, took selfies, and practiced yoga poses. Paparazzi photos also showed her and a friend holding hands as they jumped into the water.

Hadid has long been one of Cannes’ most watched fashion figures, with her red carpet looks often becoming part of the festival conversation before the films themselves. This year appears to be no different.

Between the Jane Birkin reference, the custom Schiaparelli gown, and her off-duty yacht moments, Hadid once again turned Cannes into a full fashion showcase.
