Kim Kardashian’s 2026 Met Gala look almost did not make it to the carpet.
The 45-year-old reality star and Skims founder appeared in a bold liquid-metal look that seemed solid enough in photos. Behind the scenes, though, the piece was more fragile than it looked. During glam, Kardashian accidentally knocked into part of the sculptural design and immediately panicked that she had damaged it.
In a video later shared by ‘Vogue’ on TikTok, Kardashian reacted fast.
“Oh! Did I break it?” she said. “I ran into it so hard.”
Then came the real concern. “If I broke it or chipped it…we wouldn’t have had a Met look,” Kardashian said. “We would’ve had to cancel!”
Kim Kardashian’s Met Gala Look Nearly Broke Before The Carpet
Kardashian did not end up canceling, but the near-miss showed how risky the outfit really was.
Her custom look was created by artist Allen Jones in collaboration with design duo Whitaker Malem. The orange sculptural piece was designed to mimic a stylized human torso, leaning directly into the 2026 Met Gala theme, ‘Costume Art,’ and the dress code ‘Fashion Is Art.’
The design was dramatic, body-focused and highly structured. It also left almost no room for error. One wrong bump could have ruined the entire look before she ever reached the Metropolitan Museum of Art steps.
That is why Kardashian’s panic made sense. For most celebrities, a last-minute wardrobe issue means a broken zipper or a loose strap. For Kim, it could have meant losing the whole concept.
She Still Made It To The Met Steps
Kardashian eventually made it to the carpet in the full look.
The sculptural orange piece was paired with a matching leather skirt and simple neutral Christian Louboutin pumps. She kept jewelry minimal and switched her signature dark hair for a blonde blowout, letting the unusual outfit carry the moment.
The look was another addition to Kardashian’s long history of Met Gala risk-taking.
She made her Met Gala debut in 2013 while pregnant with daughter North West, attending as Kanye West’s plus-one. The floral Givenchy look from that year became one of her most discussed early fashion moments.
“Kanye was performing so I wasn’t actually invited, I was just Kanye’s plus one,” she later told ‘Vogue.’
She added, “I never really dreamed I would be at the Met Ball,” and admitted, “I know no one really probably wanted me there at the time.”
Kim’s Met Gala Risks Keep Getting Bigger
Since then, Kardashian has become one of the event’s most watched arrivals.
Her Met Gala looks often come with some kind of difficulty, whether it is movement, breathing, fit or public backlash. This year, the issue was fragility.
The orange sculptural design looked powerful on the carpet, but the behind-the-scenes clip revealed a much more stressful reality. Kardashian was one hard bump away from losing the whole thing.
She made it work in the end. Still, for a few seconds before fashion’s biggest night, even Kim Kardashian thought her Met Gala was over.
