Tom Cruise is heading back to the cockpit for ‘Top Gun 3,’ and the excitement is already mixed with concern.
The 63-year-old Hollywood veteran is set to reprise his role as Pete “Maverick” Mitchell in the next chapter of the fighter-pilot franchise. Paramount Pictures confirmed the threequel is officially in development, with a script underway.
Studio co-chairs Josh Greenstein and Dana Goldberg announced the project at CinemaCon in Las Vegas on April 16, 2026. Cruise did not attend in person, but he appeared in a pre-recorded video filmed on Paramount’s Los Angeles lot.
“The future looks pretty great from here,” Cruise said.
That future includes another round with producer Jerry Bruckheimer. No director or release date has been confirmed yet. Still, after ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ grossed $1.5 billion worldwide in 2022, expectations are sky-high.
So is the worry.
Insiders Worry Cruise Will Push Too Far
Cruise has built one of Hollywood’s most durable action careers by doing what most stars would never attempt. He flies, jumps, climbs, runs, crashes, and hangs off things that make insurance teams sweat.
That commitment helped define both the ‘Top Gun’ and ‘Mission: Impossible’ franchises. It also turned him into the industry’s most famous daredevil. At 63, some insiders now fear the risk is getting harder to justify.
“There is a real sense of unease behind the excitement,” one industry source said. “Tom has built his reputation on pushing physical limits, but at this stage of his life, the margin for error is much smaller, and people worry about what could happen if something goes wrong.”
Another insider added that Cruise still thrives on risk, but concern around him is growing.
“There is an increasing fear that continuing to attempt these extreme action sequences could have serious, even life-threatening consequences,” the insider said. “It is something people around him are quietly concerned about.”
‘Top Gun 3’ Has Been Building For Years
The third film follows years of speculation after ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ became one of the biggest theatrical comebacks of the decade.
Cast members including Glen Powell and Miles Teller have previously hinted that talks were happening. Powell teased that “some fun stuff” would be announced, though he said details were confidential.
He also said he had stayed in regular contact with Cruise, ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ director Joseph Kosinski, and Bruckheimer. That kept fans watching for any sign that Maverick might fly again.
Screenwriter Ehren Kruger, who co-wrote ‘Top Gun: Maverick,’ is understood to be working on the new script. Christopher McQuarrie is also expected to be part of the returning creative brain trust.
McQuarrie previously suggested the story was already clear.
“No, it’s already in the bag,” he said. “Yeah, I already know what it is.”
The Franchise Still Depends On Cruise’s Risk Factor
The tricky part is obvious. Cruise’s physical commitment is a huge part of the brand.
Audiences do not show up only for nostalgia. They show up because Cruise makes the danger feel real. That has been the selling point for decades, and ‘Top Gun 3’ will likely face pressure to go bigger.
“The expectation is always that Tom will raise the bar again,” one source said. “But that also means escalating the danger.”
That is the tension around ‘Top Gun 3.’ Fans want the rush. The studio wants the spectacle. Cruise, if history is any guide, will want the real thing.
The question now is how far Maverick can go before the risk becomes the story.
