Jacqueline Falk, the adopted daughter of late ‘Columbo’ star Peter Falk, has died. She was 60.
According to a report from the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner, Jacqueline died at her residence on Monday, April 27. Her death was ruled a suicide, though the case remains an open investigation.
Jacqueline largely lived outside the public eye, but her connection to one of television’s most beloved detectives has brought renewed attention to the Falk family story.
Peter Falk, who died in 2011 at 83 after battling Alzheimer’s disease and dementia, was best known for playing Lieutenant Columbo. The role earned him four Emmy Awards and turned him into one of TV’s most recognizable stars.
Jacqueline Was One Of Peter Falk’s Two Adopted Daughters
Peter adopted Jacqueline with his first wife, Alyce Mayo. The former couple, who were college sweethearts, also adopted another daughter, Catherine.
Peter and Mayo divorced in 1976. The actor later married Shera Danese in 1977, and they remained together until his death.
Although Jacqueline kept a low profile, she did occasionally appear with her father in public. Peter brought her as his guest to the 50th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles in 1988.
Peter’s career stretched far beyond ‘Columbo.’ He also appeared in films including ‘Pocketful of Miracles,’ ‘Murder, Inc.’ and ‘The Princess Bride.’
The Falk Family Faced Legal Tension After Peter’s Illness
After Peter’s death, Catherine became an advocate for family law.
She previously claimed that she had difficulty maintaining contact with her father while he was alive and incapacitated. According to the website for the Catherine Falk Organization, Catherine and Jacqueline allegedly learned of Peter’s death “from media reports and their attorney.”
Those alleged experiences helped inspire Catherine to push for legislation known as Peter Falk’s Law. The law protects visitation and communication rights for adult children whose parents are incapacitated.
Catherine Remembered Peter As A Curious Father
Catherine has also spoken warmly about her childhood memories of Peter.
“My dad would always want to make eye contact with us,” she said in a 2023 interview. “Because my dad only had sight in his left eye, he would turn his entire head around to see us.”
She joked that this could make car rides stressful.
“We were always in a panic because he would go through red lights or wind up on the sidewalk!” she said.
Catherine also said Peter resembled Columbo in real life.
“My mom always told me my dad was Columbo long before Columbo found my dad,” she said. “He’d ask the same question like 20 different ways until he got the answer that he wanted.”
Jacqueline’s death marks another painful chapter for the Falk family, whose private struggles have long sat behind a very public Hollywood legacy.
