King Charles met Donald Trump at the White House, but the moment everyone is replaying is not the formal greeting. It is the handshake.

Trump and Melania Trump welcomed King Charles and Queen Camilla on Monday, and what should have been a standard diplomatic photo-op quickly became another internet breakdown over Trump’s famous “clasp and yank” greeting.

The president appeared to grip the King’s hand, pull toward himself, and shake firmly while patting with his other hand. It is a move Trump has used many times with world leaders.

This time, though, viewers thought Charles refused to play along.

Charles Appeared To Stand Firm

In the clip circulating on X, Trump seemed to lean into his usual handshake style. Charles did not appear to get pulled off balance. Instead, the King held his ground as the exchange stretched on for several seconds.

That was enough for social media to turn the moment into a contest.

One user wrote, “Trump is trying his toxic beta-male handshake, and Charles is having absolutely none of it.” Another joked that Trump “really tried hard” to use his handshake pull, but “the King clowned him.” A third post read, “Can’t pull that fratboy stuff on the King…Donny Boy.”

The clip spread fast because Trump’s handshakes have been internet material for years. His greeting style has been analyzed, mocked, and compared across meetings with several major leaders.

Trump’s Handshake History Is Already Famous

Trump’s handshake technique has created awkward moments before.

He had a widely discussed handshake with French President Emmanuel Macron, and his 19-second handshake with then-Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in 2017 became a viral political moment. The pattern is familiar. Trump grabs firmly, pulls the other person close and keeps control of the rhythm.

With Charles, many viewers thought the King handled it differently. He stayed composed, kept his posture and did not appear to let the exchange become Trump’s usual visual win. One social media user joked, “Decades of handshake practice with those sausages has paid off.” Another simply wrote, “Oh my god this is painful.”

Viewers Also Focused On Trump’s Hand

The handshake was not the only detail getting attention.

Some observers also commented on Trump’s hand in photos taken afterward, describing it as swollen or discolored. The online reaction quickly folded that detail into the wider joke about the handshake turning into a physical battle.

Of course, it was still just a greeting between two world figures. No official statement turned it into anything more than a diplomatic photo-op.

But online, appearances matter. A long grip, a visible pull, and a King who does not budge can become a full political meme within minutes.

For Trump, the handshake was likely another power move. For viewers, King Charles may have walked away with the cleaner viral moment.
