Katy Perry’s legal situation may be more serious than some fans assumed. The singer is reportedly under police investigation in Australia after Ruby Rose accused her of sexual assault tied to an alleged nightclub incident in Melbourne in 2010. Perry has not been charged with any crime, and her team has denied the allegation in forceful terms.

The key legal question now is timing. The alleged incident happened 16 years ago, which led some people online to ask whether the case was too old to prosecute.

According to prosecutors in Victoria, Australia, that may not protect Perry if investigators find evidence of a serious crime.

Prosecutors Say There Is No Time Limit For Serious Crimes

Jacqueline Harris, a representative for the Office of Public Prosecution in Victoria, said serious indictable crimes are not blocked by a statute of limitations.

“There is no statute of limitations on prosecuting indictable (serious) crimes in Victoria,” Harris said.

She also explained that the law in place at the time of the alleged incident would apply if a historical case moved forward.

“The law at the time the alleged offence was committed applies to criminal proceedings and sentencing for historical offences,” Harris said.

That does not mean Perry will be charged. It means prosecutors could consider the case if police investigators find evidence and refer it to them.

Ruby Rose Says She Filed A Police Report

Rose recently wrote on Threads that she was no longer allowed to speak about the case after filing a police report.

The actress, now 40, claims the alleged incident happened when she was in her early 20s at a Melbourne nightclub. In her social media post, Rose described the alleged encounter in graphic terms and said it made her physically ill.

Because the case is now reportedly with police, Rose suggested she had been advised not to continue discussing it publicly.

The allegation quickly drew major attention because both women are high-profile figures, and because Perry has long maintained a carefully managed public image as a global pop star.

Perry’s Team Denies The Allegation

Perry’s representative strongly denied Rose’s claim.

“The allegations being circulated on social media by Ruby Rose about Katy Perry are not only categorically false, they are dangerous, reckless lies,” the rep said.

The representative also questioned Rose’s credibility, saying, “Ms. Rose has a well-documented history of making serious public allegations on social media against various individuals, claims that have repeatedly been denied by those named.”

For now, the case sits in a difficult place. Rose has made a serious allegation. Perry has denied it. Prosecutors say the age of the allegation alone does not prevent possible charges if investigators find evidence of a crime.

That puts the focus back on Australian police and whether the investigation produces anything that could move the case forward.
