Justin Trudeau’s son is making one thing very clear about Katy Perry. Whatever confusion came first, he is firmly on good terms with her now.

As buzz continues around Perry’s romance with the former Canadian prime minister, Trudeau’s oldest son Xavier “Xav” Trudeau is opening up about what it has actually been like watching his father date one of the most recognizable pop stars on the planet. And from the sound of it, he is not just accepting the relationship. He is getting real advice from Perry herself.

On the April 8 episode of the ‘Can’t Be Censored’ podcast, Xav, an emerging musician, said he sometimes sends Perry his music when he feels good about a track. “When I’m really happy with a song [I] send it [to her],” he said, before adding, “She’s always happy to give me advice or tell me what I should change.”

Justin Trudeau’s Son Says Katy Perry Is ‘Super Nice’

Xav also made it clear that getting to know Perry has changed the whole picture for him. “She’s super nice. She’s super down to earth. She’s great,” he said. “I think that my dad’s happy so that’s important.”

That is a much warmer tone than the one he struck earlier, when he admitted the relationship first caught him off guard. In a previous appearance on Jessica Cruickshank’s ‘Phone a Friend’ podcast, Xav said his first reaction was quite understandable: “I was confused.”

Still, even then, he was trying to be open. “Honestly, to me, the most important thing is if they’re happy, then that’s what’s important,” he said. “I can tell he’s really happy with her. I’ve met her a couple of times, and she’s great. I’m happy for them.”

So yes, there was confusion at first. But it does not sound like there was resistance. It sounds more like the kind of surreal adjustment anyone would have watching their father date Katy Perry.

The Fame Factor Is Weird, but Xav Says He Is Used to Noise

Xav also admitted that the relationship comes with extra attention, though he sounded almost resigned to it. Because of his father’s political life, he is already used to living with public scrutiny. At this point, seeing a photo of Perry and Trudeau together is not some massive event in his house.

He said it feels “just like any other picture of my dad and my mom. Or just my dad.”

Still, he did not pretend the whole thing feels normal all the time. “My life is so crazy sometimes. I’m like, What is my life? What the hell?” Xav said. “I just laugh. The reality of it is, it’s my life. What can I do? What can I change?”

That mix of amusement and acceptance is probably the most believable part of the whole thing.

Trudeau’s Ex-wife Sophie Grégoire on the Situation

Trudeau’s ex-wife Sophie Grégoire also addressed the relationship in her own way, and her comments had a more guarded edge. Speaking on the ‘Arlene is Alone’ podcast, she said, “You know, we’re human beings, and stuff affects us. Normal.” She continued, “How you react to stuff is your decision. So, I choose to try to listen to the music instead of the noise.”

Grégoire, who was married to Trudeau for 18 years before their August 2023 split, also admitted that public attention around situations like this can stir something deeper. “I’m very aware that a lot of public stuff out there can be triggers,” she said. But she added, “What I do with it is my decision. The woman I want to become through this is my decision.”

That may be the closest anyone in the family has come to saying this romance has caused some discomfort without fully going there.

For now, though, Xav seems settled on where he stands. He likes Katy Perry, he trusts that his dad is happy, and he is even taking music notes from her. That is a better outcome than a lot of celebrity families get.
