Meryl Streep is finally admitting just how much Anna Wintour’s shadow hung over the first ‘The Devil Wears Prada’, and it sounds like even fashion insiders did not want to get caught on the wrong side of it.
As buzz keeps building around ‘The Devil Wears Prada 2’, Streep sat down with Wintour for a striking joint interview and made one thing very clear: when the first film came out in 2006, fear was part of the package. A big part.
The Oscar winner, who played icy editor-in-chief Miranda Priestly in the original hit, said the fashion world was so intimidated by Wintour that getting clothes for the movie became a battle. That detail alone says a lot about how powerful Wintour’s grip was at the time, especially since Miranda was widely seen as being inspired by the longtime Vogue editor.

Meryl Streep Says Anna Wintour’s Aura Hurt the First Film
In the joint Vogue interview, directed by ‘Barbie’ filmmaker Greta Gerwig, Streep was asked whether Miranda’s style had changed for the sequel. Her answer quickly turned into a revealing look back at the original film’s struggle for fashion support.
“Well, everybody was afraid of Anna on the first one, so we couldn’t find any clothes. Nobody would give us any clothes,” Streep said.
That is a wild image now, considering the first movie became a fashion and pop culture classic. But back then, the industry apparently did not want to be seen helping a movie that many believed was poking straight at one of its most powerful figures.
Streep also said Miranda in the sequel is “less worried about what anybody thinks,” and that shift shows up in the wardrobe. The implication is hard to miss. The fear that once shaped the movie’s fashion access has eased, and the sequel is stepping into a very different climate.

Anna Wintour Weighs In on the Film She Inspired
Wintour, for her part, also opened up about what she appreciated in the original ‘The Devil Wears Prada’. She said she admired that the movie “showed the world what a huge business fashion is.”
She added that fashion remains “a true economic force globally,” while describing the industry as evolving rather than falling apart.
Wintour also shared a more personal detail about the sequel. After hearing rumors that a second film was happening, she called Streep before the actress had even read the script. Later, Wintour said, Streep rang back with a reassuring verdict: “Anna, I think it’s going to be all right.”
That little exchange feels very on-brand. Cool, careful, and just personal enough to keep people curious about how much of Anna still lives inside Miranda.
The Movie Promo Is Giving Fans Exactly What They Want
The joint cover itself is part of why fans are eating this up. Streep and Wintour appeared in coordinated Prada looks and dark sunglasses, giving off near-twin energy in a pairing that feels tailor-made for sequel hype.

And Streep had already been serving fashion before that. A day earlier, she reportedly turned heads at a fan event in Tokyo wearing a bold Chanel Métiers d’Art Pre-Fall 2026 look, complete with a vermillion coat, matching skirt, square sunglasses, and sharply styled heels. The blood-red vibe even called back to the original film’s poster imagery, which only added more fuel to the nostalgia machine.
At this point, ‘The Devil Wears Prada 2’ is not just selling a sequel. It is selling a return to one of the most legendary and chic power fantasies Hollywood ever gave us. And now Streep is making it even juicier by saying the real fashion world was once too scared to dress it.
