Colin Jost proved he can take a joke about his marriage—and fire back with one of his own. During the March 14 episode of Saturday Night Live, the comedian delivered a witty response after his Weekend Update co-anchor Michael Che teased him about his relationship with wife Scarlett Johansson.
The moment happened during the show’s popular news-style comedy segment when Che introduced a story about a traditional sporting event overseas. He told viewers that the winners of the annual wife-carrying contest in England were a couple from Finland, setting up the punchline that followed.
Che then turned the joke toward Jost’s marriage, adding, “Meanwhile, once again, the winner of the husband-carrying contest was Scarlett.” The audience immediately burst into laughter and applause at the playful jab aimed at Johansson’s superstar status compared to Jost’s.
Jost waited for the crowd’s reaction to settle before delivering his comeback with perfect timing. “We both put food on the table,” he replied. “They’re just different kinds of food.” His quick response drew another wave of laughs from the audience.
The joke leaned into a familiar theme surrounding the couple, whose careers often spark playful commentary because Johansson is one of Hollywood’s biggest movie stars. Jost, meanwhile, has built his career primarily in comedy and television writing, particularly through his long-running role on Saturday Night Live.
This isn’t the first time Jost has joked publicly about Johansson’s blockbuster success. During a January episode of Weekend Update, he noted that actress Zoe Saldaña had surpassed Johansson as the highest-grossing actress in Hollywood history.
Jost couldn’t resist adding a punchline then as well, joking, “Okay, well let’s see what happens if you include the box office from Scarlett’s husband’s movies.” The line was another example of the comedian poking fun at himself while referencing Johansson’s massive film career.
Jost and Johansson married in 2020 after several years of dating. The couple welcomed their son, Cosmo, in 2021, and they’ve occasionally shared humorous glimpses of their relationship during interviews and television appearances.
Johansson is also the mother of a daughter, Rose, from her previous marriage to French journalist Romain Dauriac. Despite their high-profile careers, the couple generally keeps their family life private while occasionally leaning into jokes about their relationship in public.
