Kathryn Hahn is set to play one of Disney’s most memorable villains in the studio’s upcoming live-action adaptation of Tangled.
Disney confirmed that Hahn, known for roles in WandaVision and Bad Moms, will portray Mother Gothel, the manipulative antagonist who keeps Rapunzel locked away in a tower.
The film will retell the story introduced in Disney’s 2010 animated hit, which followed Rapunzel, a young woman with magical golden hair who escapes her isolated life after meeting the roguish Flynn Rider.
Hahn shared the casting news with fans on Instagram through a playful video showing off an outfit featuring the animated version of Mother Gothel.
Fans and fellow performers quickly reacted online, including Donna Murphy, who voiced the villain in the original animated film.
“From one Mother to another…Congrats! And remember… I love you MOST,” Murphy wrote, referencing a famous line from the character.

Hahn also embraced the role by updating her social media bio with a lyric from “Mother Knows Best,” the villain’s signature song from the animated film.
Disney officially announced the casting with a post on X, writing, “You want her to be the bad guy? Fine. Kathryn Hahn is Mother Gothel in Disney’s live-action Tangled.”
The project already has a growing cast. Australian actor Teagan Croft will play Rapunzel, while Milo Manheim has been cast as Flynn Rider.
The live-action remake continues Disney’s strategy of reimagining popular animated films with new casts and updated productions.
