David Bowie’s daughter is sharing a deeply personal chapter of her life—one marked by grief, absence, and painful decisions made during her teenage years.
Alexandria “Lexi” Jones, now 25, recently revealed that she was not present during her father’s final days in 2016 as he battled liver cancer. According to Lexi, she had been placed in a treatment program to address struggles with depression, anxiety, an eating disorder, and substance use. Bowie died at age 69, and Lexi says learning of his passing while away from home was devastating.
In an emotional account shared on social media, Lexi described reaching what she called a “breaking point” after Bowie’s cancer diagnosis in 2014. She admitted turning to alcohol and drugs as a form of escape during her early teens. At 14, she said she was sent to a treatment facility after her family determined she needed intensive support. Lexi recalled receiving a letter from her father expressing sorrow over the decision, which she described as a painful but complicated moment in their relationship.
Lexi detailed spending 91 days in a wilderness therapy program, followed by more than a year in residential treatment. It was during that time, she said, that she learned of her father’s death. She had spoken with him two days earlier, on his birthday, and they exchanged “I love you.” Seeing public reports stating Bowie passed away surrounded by family, she wrote, was especially difficult knowing she was not physically there.
Now an adult, Lexi says she is sharing her experience to shed light on the mental health challenges she faced and the complicated reality of growing up in the shadow of global fame. While she acknowledges the pain of those years, she also credits therapy and self-reflection for helping her build emotional resilience.
