Steven Spielberg is stepping up for James Van Der Beek’s family in a major way.

The Oscar-winning director and his wife, Kate Capshaw, have donated $25,000 to the GoFundMe campaign established to support Van Der Beek’s wife, Kimberly, and their six children following the actor’s death at 48 after a battle with colorectal cancer.

The fundraiser, created by close friends, was launched to help offset the financial strain caused by years of medical treatment. Within hours of going live, donations poured in. As of Thursday afternoon, the campaign had surged past $1.8 million, blowing past its revised $1.5 million goal after initially launching with a $550,000 target.

Van Der Beek publicly revealed in November 2024 that he had been privately battling Stage 3 colorectal cancer since August 2023. In the months that followed, he sold memorabilia and made public appearances when possible, while quietly continuing treatment.

Spielberg and Van Der Beek never officially worked together, but there is a symbolic connection. On Dawson’s Creek, Van Der Beek’s character famously idolized Spielberg, with posters of the director’s films decorating his bedroom set. Last year, Spielberg even surprised fans during a reunion event with a video message congratulating the cast.

Other Hollywood names have also contributed to the campaign. Director Jon M. Chu donated $10,000, and Zoe Saldaña-Perego pledged a recurring monthly contribution.

The GoFundMe page describes a family trying to maintain stability after a prolonged and costly fight against cancer. Organizers say the funds will help cover basic living expenses, outstanding bills, and the children’s education as Kimberly and the kids adjust to life without their husband and father.

The wave of donations underscores just how deeply Van Der Beek’s loss has resonated across Hollywood and with fans who grew up watching him on screen.
