Park Bo Gum Opens Up About Injury on ‘Good Boy’ Set

South Korean actor Park Bo Gum opened up about sustaining an injury while filming his new drama Good Boy, marking his return to action roles following military service.

The cast and crew gathered on Thursday for the official press conference at The Link Seoul in Guro District. Stars Park Bo Gum, Kim So Hyun, Oh Jung Se, Lee Sang Yi, Heo Sung Tae, Tae Won Seok, and director Shim Na Yeon were all in attendance to introduce JTBC’s upcoming weekend drama.

Good Boy is a high-octane action-comedy crime series that follows a team of former national athletes who join the police force through a special recruitment program. Trading Olympic medals for police badges, they take on a corrupt world where rules are made to be broken. The series is directed by Shim Na Yeon (Beyond Evil, The Good Bad Mother) and penned by Life on Mars and Chief of Staff screenwriter Lee Dae Il.

Park Bo Gum stars as Yoon Dong Joo, a former boxing gold medalist who joins a special violent crimes task force. Once an undefeated fighter with 15 straight wins, Dong Joo returns to public life after an 11-year absence — this time, not as a champion athlete, but as a rookie cop.

“This is my first action role since completing my military service, and it was a genre I’d always wanted to try,” Park said at the event. “It was physically intense, but I never felt emotionally drained. I just wanted to keep getting better.”

Determined to embody the role authentically, Park underwent rigorous training alongside his co-stars. “I wanted actual athletes to look at this and say, ‘He looks like the real deal,'” he explained. “We all came in early to rehearse our action scenes, and we trained for more than six months.”

However, his commitment came at a price. “I pushed myself a little too hard and ended up with a minor injury,” he admitted. “It caused some delays, but our director told me, ‘If you recover properly, you’ll be back sooner, so don’t worry.'”

Park ultimately made a full recovery after six weeks, and since then, he’s been back on set without taking a single day off. “I’ve been working non-stop,” he said, thanking the production staff for their support and dedication.

Good Boy, featuring a high-profile ensemble cast including Oh Jung Se and Kim So Hyun, is set to premiere January 31 at 10:40 p.m. KST on JTBC.
